Why “Orized”

The name Orized actually came from my grandmother’s old yarn basket, tucked in the corner of her sewing room. She used to call her leftover yarn ends her “odds and ends,” and as a kid I’d mash the words together when I asked to play with them — “odds-and-ized.” It stuck as a family joke for years, and when I finally sat down to name this blog, it felt right to bring a piece of her into it. Orized is my small way of keeping that basket, and her patience, alive.

How It All Started

I learned to crochet from that same grandmother when I was about eight, sitting next to her on rainy afternoons. I picked it back up in my late thirties, mostly to make something for my niece’s first baby — and I never really put the hook down again. What began as a quiet hobby slowly became something I couldn’t stop doing, and eventually became Orized.

What I love most about crochet is how it forces you to slow down. Nothing happens fast. Every piece takes hours, patience, and steady attention — and that’s exactly why I fell for it, at 45, with a lot more patience than I had at eight.

Why Baby Crochet

I gravitated naturally toward baby pieces: onesies, booties, blankets, and stuffed toys. There’s something about handmaking what a newborn will wear against their skin in their very first months — it takes care, it takes attention, and it matters, both to me and to the parents who use these patterns for their own little ones.

Orized isn’t a shop — it’s a free crochet blog. Every pattern here is free to read and follow: baby blankets, booties, hats, and other small handmade pieces, written out step by step so anyone, from complete beginners to experienced crocheters, can make them at home.

I write these patterns the way I wish someone had written them for me when I was starting out — clear, unhurried, and tested by hand before they ever go on the site.
